Pros and cons of high and low phosphates: Phosphate is a major macronutrient essential for plants. Phosphate enters the aquarium through external sources like supply water, fish food, phosphate fertilizers and buffers. Supplementing phosphate fertilizer is essential in aquaria and so is maintaining the optimum levels.

Phosphate is harmless to fish at optimum levels, but high concentrations can promote algal growth. Most commonly seen algae include Blue green algae, filamentous algae, thread algae and green spot algae. These algae alter the pH and reduce oxygen availability.

How to manage phosphate levels?

• Water Changes: Performing routine water changes helps dilute phosphate levels in the aquarium. Aim for weekly water changes of around 30-50% of the total volume.
• Proper feeding: Feed your fish only what they consume within a few minutes.
• Regular aquarium maintenance: Clean your aquarium substrate, filter media routinely to remove debris.
• If phosphate is too low, then use Aquavascular P- Boost fertilizer.

Instructions for Phosphate test:

* Take 5 ml of aquarium water into the test vial.
* Add 8 drops of Solution PO4-1 and mix for 10 seconds.
* Add 8 drops of Solution PO4-2 and mix for 10 seconds.
* Place the test vial against the color chart to obtain reading.
